This newspaper clipping from the now defunct Port Hope Evening Guide newspaper, dated April 26, 2000, may give some perspective on why Port Hope’s rural Ward 2 is in an uproar over a proposed 46.9% tax increase while having received no new or improved levels of service since the former Township of Hope amalgamated with the Town of Port Hope in 2001.
Prior to Hope Township and the Town of Port Hope amalgamating in 2001, the Township had no debt and not only low taxes but had seen a decrease in their municipal tax bill for the previous 9 years.
