Port Hope’s tree advisory committee and the staff and students of George Hamilton School celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2014 by planting a red sunset maple tree. The small shovels were supplied by Pam Lancaster of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) who is an alumnus of this school in Welcome, Ontario. Participation in the the event by the entire school was enthusiastic and sparked by grade five student Abbigail-Lewis Maher’s environmental suggestion in her letter to the Mayor for a Day competition. Municipality of Port Hope representatives, Deputy Mayor Jeff Gilmer and Councillor Greg Burns were on hand to share the appreciation of its trees and its environmentally-minded youth.
